Home orthodontics Whitening From Your Dentist

It used to be that the only orthodontics whitening treatment available was through your local dentist. That’s because orthodontics whitening solutions or gels were thought to be somewhat dangerous in the hands of the everyday consumer. They carried with them a high concentration of peroxide and could easily irritate or burn the softer tissues in and around the mouth if they were used incorrectly. So dentists remained in charge of early orthodontics whitening treatments.

Now however, with so many people looking to improve their smile, and cosmetic dentistry booming, many dentists have begun to “out-source” their orthodontics whitening procedures to their own patients. The change is probably based in part on economics; after all, it probably brings more money to the bottom line for a dentist to treat a patient who needs fillings or braces for an hour or two than someone who merely wants whiter orthodontics. Plus by out-sourcing, a dentist can see many more patients. So the times have changed.

Now when you go to many dentists for a whitening treatment, they’ll outfit you with dental trays and orthodontics whitening gel, give you some simple instructions on what to do, and then send you off on your merry way to go whiten your orthodontics on your own. They may schedule a follow-up visit with you a couple weeks down the road or have you come to the office to pick up moreorthodontics whitening gel, but it’s unlikely that you’ll ever receive the kind of treatment that was once the standard in dental offices for whitening.

The upside of this for the consumers is that it gives us more options that we can fit into our ever-busy lifestyles. We’re not trapped into time-consuming office visits any longer; we’re in control. The downside of course is that we don’t enjoy the same level of oversight and care that we did in the dental office. – and we must be more diligent and cautious if we’re going to be successful.
